Genital and Reporductive Anomalies in Children

INTRODUCTION

Genital and Reproductive Anomalies in Children / Disorders of Sexual Development in children includes a wide range of conditions and syndromes that result in children who are born with anomalies (variations or differences) of their sex organs.

Genital and reproductive organs are formed in the early stages of pregnancy. Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, errors in sexual development occur. Children can be born with non-typical genitals (such as micropenis, an enlarged clitoris, and hypospadias, a condition in which the opening of the penis appears on the undersurface rather than at the tip) and/or missing or malformed reproductive organs (such as a short vagina and an absent uterus). A partial list of syndromes which have these types of variations associated with them include: Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS), Bladder Exstrophy, Mayer Rokitansky Syndrome, Turner Syndrome and Klinefelter Syndrome. Other MAGIC divisions represent several of these conditions. It is the genital and reproductive features of these syndromes that are the focus of GRAC’s attention.

Welcome to the Genital and Reproductive Anomalies in Children (GRAC) section of MAGIC.

On this page you will find:

  • A general description of GRAC issues
  • Links to specific medical articles helpful to parents concerning various syndromes and conditions which cross into this topic, and other resources is listed below
  • A Glossary of Terms (to your left) to help you fully understand specific medical terms.

If you need help, or want to speak to a parent of a child with a GRAC condition contact us at (708) 383-0808 or
